Filter-press cake extruder re-engineered as a batch pugmill
Originally built to break up filter-press cake into pugs for downstream pugmill feeding, this heavy-duty extruder was re-engineered by SMI for a new role. We designed and installed a custom control system and redesigned the shaft and seal assembly, turning the machine into a high-capacity pugmill that homogenizes 1,300 lb batches of dry and wet pottery clay at the push of a button. It replaced an entire set of older equipment with one unit and cut the customer’s production time and operating costs to a fraction of what they were.
Industrial ceramic mixer, fully rebuilt
SMI worked with a leading art-clay manufacturer to fully rebuild this previously owned industrial ceramic mixer. It now mixes and de-airs 1,200 lb batches at 6,000 lb per hour. A job that took three operators is now nearly automatic, finishes in a third of the time, and takes much less floor space.
Orphaned lab extruder, completed
SMI received this orphaned lab extruder as a half-finished pile of parts. We brought it back to life with a new fabricated vacuum chamber, carbon steel augers, extrusion dies, and a full control system.
Pugmill vacuum chamber, rebuilt
Major components wear out over time. SMI rebuilt this pugmill vacuum chamber to better than new, with 1-1/8" carbon steel reinforcement, precision-trued surfaces, and zero leaks at full vacuum.
